   You dont ever tell if the layers are supposed to be merged or not, that confuses me a lot.

   There is no layer style called “Darken Hard Light”. Only “darken” or “hard light”. Can’t choose two. where did you get that from?

    The tutorial does need to be tweaked a bit in order to better communicate the individual steps.

    At least the .PSD file is available; you can use it to reverse engineer the process.
